Why is discipline important in student life?

How can I make my child more disciplined?

What is a good daily routine for a student?

TL;DR: The importance of discipline in student life is practical: steady study, healthy sleep and good character all depend on a child's ability to manage their own time, attention and choices. A daily routine builds that discipline by fixing times for study, sport, meals and rest, so that good choices turn into habits instead of daily arguments. No published research we reviewed measures whether a daily routine builds discipline in Indian schoolchildren, so treat this as practitioner guidance rather than a proven formula. The practical takeaway for parents is to agree a predictable routine with the child, keep expectations realistic and follow through calmly rather than harshly. What does discipline mean for a school-age child? Discipline in student life is the habit of choosing what needs doing over what feels easiest, and doing it without an adult having to insist each time. Many parents first meet the word as rules and punishment, but the version that lasts is internal: a child who sits down for the evening study hour because that is what the hour is for. Foundation For Excellence (FFE) , an India-focused scholarship charity, defined self-discipline in its April 2022 newsletter as "the ability to reject instant gratification and pleasure, in favour of some greater gain." The same newsletter splits discipline into an inner form, the capacity to tell right from wrong, and an outer form, following shared rules. Children usually meet the outer form first and grow the inner one over years. At Guru Rajendra Jain International School (GRJIS), we treat rule-following as the first stage and self-direction as the goal. A new boarder keeps to the timetable because the timetable is there. Over the years, the aim is a student who plans their own revision because they understand why it matters. Discipline matters in student life because it turns effort into habit The clearest payoff shows up in studies. FFE's newsletter makes the point that discipline helps a student maintain the regularity that subjects such as mathematics need , since maths is learnt through constant practice. A child who solves a few problems every evening carries the method forward; a child who skips a week meets the next chapter half-prepared. Regular study also removes the panic before exams. Shorelight , a US advisory service, notes in an undated guide that dedicated study time every day helps students avoid cramming at the last minute while staying fresh on the subject. The guide was written for college students in the US, but the logic holds for a Class 10 student facing board exams. Character is the second payoff. Phones, games and notifications compete for every free half hour of a student's day, and each one offers something pleasant right now. A disciplined student has practised saying "after my maths" often enough that it no longer takes a struggle. The evidence here is thinner than most articles admit. We found no published figure for India on how discipline or a daily routine changes students' marks, and the guidance available offers opinion and practice rather than measured outcomes. That is no reason to skip a routine, but it is a reason to judge one by what you see in your own child over a full term. Why do shouting and punishment fail to build discipline? UNICEF's parenting guidance , written with Professor Lucie Cluver of the University of Oxford, says repeated shouting and hitting "do not work and can do more harm than good in the long run." The same page links the "toxic stress" this creates to higher chances of outcomes including school dropout and depression, though it gives no figures or study citations for that list. Harsh punishment teaches a child to avoid getting caught, which is a different skill from managing themselves. Structure does the work that shouting cannot, because a predictable day removes most of the moments where conflict starts. When homework always follows the evening snack, there is little left to argue about. Predictable is different from rigid. A routine that breaks down the first time a cousin visits or a match runs late was too tight to begin with. Build in some slack for real life, and measure success by consistency across the week rather than perfection on every single day. A daily routine builds self-discipline through repetition A daily routine is a fixed, repeating order for the main activities of a child's day: waking, eating, studying, playing and sleeping. Its value lies in the repetition. Shorelight's guide puts the mechanism simply: activities repeated regularly eventually become habits, and sticking to the routine is itself an exercise in discipline. FFE's newsletter compresses the whole idea into one line: "Discipline creates habits, habits make routines, and routines become who you are daily." In practice, the routine does the deciding in advance. A child who knows that the hour after play is study time spends their willpower on the work rather than on the argument about when to start. Children settle into routines at different speeds, and no fixed number of days applies to every child. The routine starts as something adults hold in place, and the goal is a child who holds it alone. What is a good daily routine for a student? A good daily routine fixes the anchors of the day and leaves the rest flexible. Its anchors are wake-up time, meals, study, play or sport, and bedtime. The sample below is a template for a day scholar; adjust it for your child's age, school hours, commute and any tuition. For the clock times, popular advice gives a starting point. In an August 2025 video, the YouTube creator Time For Growth suggests waking between 5:30 and 7 a.m., keeping the phone away first thing, and using fresh morning time for the hardest subject. The same video recommends a 15 to 20 minute power nap and 20 to 30 minutes of evening movement. These are a creator's tips with no research cited, so use them as a template, not a rule. Bedtime deserves the most protection. Fix it so your child gets the full night's sleep recommended for their age, and count backwards from the wake-up time to set it. The GRJIS boarding day shows structure working without harshness GRJIS is a residential school at Mohankheda in Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh, and its whole day is built on the anchors above. The hostel day runs from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and every student keeps the same quiet hours and lights-out time. GRJIS describes its timetable as designed to balance serious academic study, yoga and learning to be independent in hostel life, in its own words a day where "every hour counts." Fixed times reach beyond the classroom. Each boarder has one 10-minute audio call a week with the person the parents nominate, on a schedule shared with families in advance. Device and internet guidelines are explained to parents at orientation, so the rules on screens are clear before the first day rather than argued over later. The adults matter as much as the timetable. GRJIS says its teachers mentor rather than only lecture, and the school pairs scientific tests with personal career coaching so that each student studies towards something they understand. The school's stated belief is to blend modern success with Bhartiya Sanskar, and it asks parents to be partners in discipline rather than bystanders. No timetable guarantees a result, but a structured boarding day gives students a predictable frame they repeat every day of the term, which is exactly the repetition a habit needs. Families who want the detail can ask the admissions team for the broad timetable, the co-curricular timetable and the weekly food menu, which GRJIS shares with parents before they apply. How can I make my child more disciplined at home? You make a child more disciplined at home with clear structure, calm follow-through and a warm relationship, not with louder rules. We suggest these steps to parents, in this order. Build the routine with your child. UNICEF's guidance quotes Professor Cluver suggesting that parents sit older children down to agree the household dos and don'ts, and even the consequences for breaking them. A child who helped write the plan has a stake in keeping it. Say exactly what you want, and keep it realistic. Professor Cluver says telling a child what to do works better than telling them what not to do , and warns that "if you ask for the impossible, they are going to fail." "Maths homework at the desk before play" gives a child something to act on. "Stop wasting time" gives them nothing. Follow through calmly, every time. UNICEF's guidance treats consistency as central and advises keeping consequences realistic , for example taking a teenager's phone away for an hour rather than a week. A small consequence you actually apply teaches more than a large one you abandon on day two. Give short, phone-free one-on-one time. Professor Cluver suggests that even 5 to 20 minutes a day of focused time, with the TV and phone off, helps build a positive relationship. Discipline rests on that relationship, because children accept structure more readily from adults they feel close to. Model the routine yourself. Children copy what parents do far more than what parents say. If the rule is no phones at dinner, the parents' phones go in the drawer too. Start small and lengthen. A study block your child can finish beats an ambitious one abandoned halfway. Add time once the shorter block holds steadily, and praise the effort rather than only the marks. Importance of Discipline in Student Life, and How a Daily…

Importance of Discipline in Student Life, and How a Daily Routine Builds It

Discipline is important in student life because regular study, enough sleep and steady habits all depend on it. A disciplined student revises a little every day instead of cramming, keeps the phone in its place and finishes what they start. Discipline also shapes character, teaching a child to choose a longer-term gain over instant pleasure.

No, discipline is not the same as punishment. Punishment is an adult's reaction after something goes wrong, while discipline is a child's growing ability to manage their own time, behaviour and choices. UNICEF's parenting guidance warns that repeated shouting and hitting do more harm than good, so calm structure and clear expectations build discipline better.

Is discipline the same as punishment?

A good daily routine for a student fixes five anchors: wake-up time, meals, study blocks, play or sport, and bedtime. Everything else can flex around those anchors. The routine should suit the child's age, school hours and commute, and parents should build it together with the child rather than hand it down.

A student should wake up at the same time every day, early enough for a calm start before school. One widely viewed August 2025 study-routine video by the creator Time For Growth suggests waking between 5:30 and 7 a.m., but that window is a tip, not research, so fit it to the school timetable.

What time should a student wake up for studies?

No fixed number of days applies to every child getting used to a new routine. Children adjust at different speeds depending on age, temperament and the size of the change. Keep the new routine consistent, expect a few uneven weeks at the start, and judge a child's progress over a full school term rather than a single week.

How long does a child take to get used to a new routine?

A student's routine can relax on weekends and holidays, but the anchors should stay close to the school-day pattern. Keep wake-up time, meals and bedtime near their weekday slots and loosen the study blocks instead. A routine that collapses every Sunday has to be rebuilt every Monday, which costs the child more effort than it saves.

Should a student's routine change on weekends and holidays?

The simplest way to keep the phone out of study time is to keep the phone out of the study space. Agree a rule with your child, such as the phone charging in another room during the evening study block, and follow through calmly every time. Phone-free study works better when parents put their own phones away too.

How do I stop my child using the phone during study time?

A boarding school gives a child a fixed daily structure, but discipline still depends on how that structure is used and how the adults guide the child. At GRJIS, the hostel day runs from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. in a set rhythm of study, yoga and hostel life, with teachers mentoring students towards managing themselves.

What to Do After 12th Commerce

What are the subjects in Class 11 commerce?

Should I take commerce with maths or without maths?

What can I do after 12th commerce?

TL;DR: Class 11 commerce subjects in a CBSE school are usually Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics and English, plus one elective, and that elective slot is where the maths decision sits. Commerce without maths keeps B.Com , BBA, CA, CS and the integrated BA LLB open, according to Coursera's 2025 guide to commerce without maths , though eligibility for specific B.Com and BBA programmes varies by university. Keeping Mathematics or Applied Mathematics also protects the quantitative routes: economics honours, BMS, statistics, actuarial science and analytics. A student who has not firmly settled on CA, CS, CMA or law should take Applied Mathematics in Class 11, because it keeps the most routes open. Class 11 commerce has four core subjects and one elective slot The commerce stream is the senior secondary track, starting in Class 11, that prepares students for accounting, business, economics and finance. In most CBSE schools, a commerce student studies Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics and English, then adds one elective from the subjects the school runs. That makes five subjects for most students, and the fifth is where families face the maths question. Coursera's 2025 summary of the CBSE scheme describes the structure from the board's side: Hindi or English as the first subject, then three or more academic or skill-based electives, with Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics and Entrepreneurship as common commerce choices. Accountancy introduces accounting concepts and the full process, from journal and ledger entries through bank reconciliation and depreciation to the trial balance, and it rests on accurate arithmetic and percentages rather than calculus. Economics pairs introductory microeconomics with statistics, so a student who drops maths still works with data in Class 11. Business Studies and English complete the core. Which subjects can fill the elective slot? Mathematics is an elective in CBSE commerce, though some schools turn the slot into a required choice between Mathematics and another subject such as Informatics Practices. Coursera's guide lists further options that, depending on the school, include Informatics Practices, Legal Studies and Psychology, or skill subjects such as Banking and Marketing . Not every school offers all three maths positions (Core Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or no maths at all), so the first step is to ask your school for its actual subject list. Adding maths to commerce mainly changes which degrees stay open CBSE runs two separate maths subjects for Classes 11 and 12: Mathematics (code 041), often called Core Maths, and Applied Mathematics (code 241). No published figure shows how many Indian commerce students take Core Maths, Applied Maths or no maths. Students on Quora who have been through the choice describe commerce without maths as common and workable , but that is experience rather than data. Any claim that "most students" drop maths is a guess. Dropping maths does not remove numbers from commerce, because Accountancy, Economics and most professional and entrance exams still test calculation and data reading. What the student gives up is depth in algebra, calculus and probability. Where does commerce without maths lead after Class 12? Commerce without maths still leads to CA, CS, CMA, B.Com and law, because the professional accounting and company law routes do not depend on Class 12 maths. As currently reported, ICAI, ICSI and the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) do not list Class 11 or 12 Mathematics as an eligibility condition for CA, CS or CMA. Each institute publishes its own rules, so confirm them on its website in the year your child applies. SAGE University's course guide sets out the three courses. CA, run by ICAI, has three levels (Foundation, Intermediate and Final) and usually takes three to five years. CS, regulated by ICSI, focuses on corporate law, governance and compliance over about three to five years, while CMA has three levels over three to four years and centres on cost control and budgeting. Students can provisionally register for CA Foundation after passing Class 10, subject to ICAI's requirements. CA Foundation includes a Quantitative Aptitude paper on business mathematics, logical reasoning and statistics, so a student who drops maths gains study time now but has to learn those topics before that paper. B.Com , most BBA programmes and integrated law degrees (BA LLB and BBA LLB) are also open to commerce students without maths, subject to each university's or institution's own admission rules. Salary claims for commerce careers rest on thin evidence Most salary ranges in circulation come from universities recruiting students or from firms selling courses, with no stated method or sample, and they disagree with one another on CA pay. The most traceable figure is this one: That is a career-level average from self-reported data, not starting pay. Pay in every commerce career depends heavily on the employer and the skills a person builds, so treat any range as a rough signal and never as a promise. Which courses become harder to reach without Class 12 maths? Dropping maths narrows the quantitative undergraduate degrees first, and Delhi University shows the pattern clearly. In recent DU admission cycles, B.A. (Hons) Economics, BMS and BBA-FIA have generally required Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, with no Accountancy-based alternative. B.Com (Hons) at DU, by contrast, has accepted an Accountancy-based CUET subject combination as well as a Maths-based one. CUET adds a second lock. For DU admissions, the CUET subjects a student picks generally need to match subjects studied in Class 12, so the Class 11 choice carries all the way into college applications. Even where school maths is not an eligibility condition, entrance tests often include a quantitative aptitude section. Degrees built on maths sit further down the same road. SAGE University's guide describes Bachelor of Statistics as suited to commerce students with strong mathematical and analytical skills, and actuarial science is often suggested on Quora for commerce students who enjoy maths . Families looking at IPMAT, IIM Indore's entrance test for its integrated programme in management, should read the current test pattern and eligibility on IIM Indore's admissions page before fixing Class 11 subjects. Read this table as a map of where to check, not a rulebook: every rule in it can change from one admission cycle to the next. GRJIS builds its commerce programme around Applied Mathematics and career guidance Guru Rajendra Jain International School (GRJIS), a residential school at Mohankheda in Dhar district near Indore, runs a Grade 11 and 12 commerce programme with Accountancy, Economics, Business Studies, Statistics and English as its core. The optional subjects are Applied Mathematics, Physical Education, Informatics Practices and Hindi. GRJIS teaches Entrepreneurship only in a year when more than 15 students choose it. Two things follow for a GRJIS family. The maths choice at GRJIS is Applied Mathematics or a non-maths elective, and Applied Mathematics is the option this guide recommends to undecided students. Statistics sits in the core, so every commerce student builds data skills whichever elective they pick, which answers a worry often voiced on Quora that skipping maths makes financial analysis, forecasting and budgeting harder to grasp . Families who want Core Mathematics, or details of fees and admission dates, should ask the GRJIS admissions team. The subject choice at GRJIS comes with support around it. Grade 11 and 12 students get stream-specific career guidance, university short-listing, Life Readiness workshops and higher order thinking work, and the school uses tests and personal career coaching to help each student find where their strengths lie. For a student torn between CA and an economics degree, that means taking Applied Mathematics, testing both interests in Class 11, and short-listing universities in Class 12 against their current rules. Who should take maths in Class 11, and who can drop it? Take Applied Mathematics, or Core Mathematics where the school offers it, unless your child is firmly set on a route that does not need it. Keeping maths closes no doors, while dropping it closes some. Keep maths if any of these fit: Your child is undecided. Plans made at 15 can change before Class 12 ends, and Applied Mathematics costs little if they do. A maths-based CUET combination later depends on maths studied in Class 12. CA is the goal and maths comes easily. Maths is not an eligibility condition for CA, but Nirma University's career guide notes that CA suits students who are strong in accounting and mathematics. A student who keeps maths meets the Quantitative Aptitude paper already prepared. Economics honours, BMS or BBA-FIA is on the list. These programmes have generally asked for Mathematics or Applied Mathematics at DU, and many universities ask for maths for economics honours. Without it, the application stops at eligibility. Statistics, actuarial science, analytics or finance-heavy work appeals. These courses build directly on algebra, probability and statistics. Applied Mathematics covers much of that ground in Class 11 and 12. Drop maths only if all of these fit: The target route is CA, CS, CMA, B.Com or law, and it is firm. These routes stay open in eligibility terms without Class 12 maths. Check each target university's B.Com rules anyway, because they differ. Maths would pull other marks down. A student who struggles with algebra can still do well in Accountancy, which tests a different kind of thinking. The freed time goes into the core subjects that carry the board result. There is a plan for the quantitative content later. Some commerce students point out that CA entry exams and MBA entrance tests include quantitative sections , so the numbers return either way. Budget time in Class 12 for business maths and statistics. If two or more of the "keep maths" points fit your child, take Applied Mathematics and move on to the next decision. Class 11 Commerce Subjects: Maths or No Maths, and Where Each Leads

Class 11 commerce subjects in most CBSE schools are Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics and English, plus one elective such as Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Informatics Practices or Physical Education. Most commerce students sit five subjects in total. The electives on offer depend on the school, so families should check the school's own subject list before choosing.

Take commerce with maths, or Applied Mathematics, if you are undecided or interested in economics honours, BMS, statistics, analytics or management entrance tests. Commerce without maths suits a student firmly set on CA, CS, CMA, B.Com or law who finds maths a strain. Taking maths closes no routes, while commerce without maths closes some.

Maths in Class 11 and 12 is not a listed eligibility condition for CA under ICAI's rules as currently reported, and Coursera's 2025 guide lists CA among the routes open without maths. CA still tests maths through the Quantitative Aptitude paper in CA Foundation. Confirm the current CA rules on ICAI's website before deciding.

Is maths compulsory for CA?

After 12th commerce, students can take B.Com, BBA, BMS, an economics degree, an integrated law degree such as BA LLB, or professional courses such as CA, CS and CMA. Some later add an MBA or move into banking, audit and marketing. Which routes stay open depends partly on whether the student kept maths in Class 11 and 12.

Dropping maths in Class 11 does affect CUET choices. For Delhi University admissions, the CUET subjects a student picks generally need to match subjects studied in Class 12, so a student without Mathematics or Applied Mathematics cannot use a maths-based combination. DU's B.Com (Hons) has accepted an Accountancy-based combination in recent cycles; check the current DU CSAS bulletin.

Does dropping maths in Class 11 affect CUET?

Commerce without maths is a sound choice for a student set on CA, CS, CMA, B.Com or law. One BBA graduate who first urged students to take maths later wrote on Quora that topics like integration are rarely used outside finance and analytics specialisations. The real cost of commerce without maths is a shorter list of quantitative degrees.
